Chile Climate Teams exploration process

The project considers Chile as a host country and Switzerland and New Zealand as partner countries. These countries share a history of trust, climate ambition, and complementarity with regards to the availability of resources and low-cost emission reduction potential. There is, therefore, a high likelihood that a Climate Teams initiative between them could materialise after the concept is further developed and it gains political support. However, the project is not predicated upon pre-commitment from any government to proceed with negotiations. Its aim is to implement an international collaborative process involving research and facilitated dialogue among technical experts to develop a prototype Climate Team agreement. This agreement could potentially form the basis for future negotiations to transfer mitigation outcomes between host and partner governments. Regardless of how the prototype is used in the future, the work to develop the prototype will help with identifying and overcoming the technical challenges associated with government agreements for international transfers of mitigation.
